Writing a college essay doesn’t have to be that hard, especially when you have a number of different college app essay prompts at your disposal. But how do you know exactly which you’re supposed to use? How does one college admission essay prompt differ from another? Could there be such a thing as the right one for you?
Differences in college entry essay prompts
As you may already know, there are many different college app essay prompts available out there. Ever since colleges first started mandating the submission of college application essays alongside other application requirements for students, these writing prompts have been in existence. And they are not all the same. College essay writing prompts can be about virtually any topic. Some of the main varieties involve a student’s personal, academic, and extracurricular life. These topics, in turn, can be used as the basis for even more topics that can be used as the main idea in a student’s college application essay. Writing prompts for college application essays are more different than you think. Here’s one example:
- Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn.
In this writing prompt, a student is incited to discuss a possible low point in his or her life, only to reveal how it was possible to overcome the adversity at a later point, or if not then what kind of lessons were learned in the process of facing it. Here is yet another example:
- Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
Like the first writing prompt above, this one implores the student to look back into the past. However, it is not to find and discuss a personal failure, but rather a possible success in terms of how he or she managed to adapt to changing circumstances.
More college entry essay prompts
There are even more writing prompts available than the ones mentioned above. And all of the college app essay prompts that you will encounter are different from one another.
